30 day challenge - Day 3

Day three is my favourite tv program. This one was hard to choose as I love sooo many programmes. But I managed to narrow it down to three!

First is Teachers. This was on Channel 4 a few years ago (from 2001 - 2004 I believe) and it was based around, believe it or not, a group of teachers. It was quite a dry comedy and isn't everyones cup of tea but I loved it and seen as in 2001, when it started, I was 11-12 years old, I defiantly shouldn't have been watching it. Naughty me!!

It started showing on a satellite TV channel, can't remember which one, a couple of years ago which got me back into watching it so I bought the box set which I have watched many times over.

Next is Dinnerladies. This was only shown on BBC for two series (1998 - 2000) and was written by and stared the fabulous Victoria Wood. This is very much family humour which was a bit tongue in cheek but it's all very innocent. I can't remember the exact line but it goes something like this:

Stan (to Anita who had a blow up male doll, Malcolm, to go in the car with her to prevent her being attacked): "You'd better blow Malcolm up a bit more, you don't want him going down on you"

Once again this was shown on Sky on UK TV GOLD or GOLD (as it's been re-branded) which got me back into it and again I bought the box set which has been well used!

Finally it's the Vicar of Dibley which starred the amazing Dawn French. This is the longest running out of my three choices (1994 - 2007) which I think was due to not only Dawn French taking the lead role of Geraldine Granger but because Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, Blackadder and Mr Bean) was it's writer.

With only Geraldine as the main character I don't think it would have been such a success (even though Dawn French is hilarious) but with the back up of such amazing characters such as Owen Newitt, who has a fascination with animals & sex, Alice Tinker, the naive verger, Jim Trott, no, no, no, no, yes (I don't need to say more on that one), Frank Pickle, the pedantic, still in the closet parish council note taker, and of course David and Hugo Horton, the upper class brainy father and not-so-brainy son, we tuned in to see what they were going to get up in their village cappers. Oh and of course there was Liz Smith who played Mrs Cropley who's unusual cooking combinations made you laugh and cringe at the same time!

Again I bought the box set of this but it hasn't been as well used as the other two but it's still a great watch.

30 day challenge - Day 2

Day 2 of the 30 day challenge is favourite film. Again like yesterday I'm going to use my favourite film of the moment, which is actually 2 films!

First is Bride Wars. I Sky + this a few weeks ago and watched it on Saturday night. I expected great things from this film but thought that it might be one of those films where you got shown all the good bits in the trailer but I was wrong. Ok, so some of the incident Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Liv (Kate Hudson) get into are a little far fetched (the orange fake tan and the blue hair dye mix up) but overall it is a great chick flick (don't want to say too much because I don't want to spoil it for anyone)!

Secondly is Confessions of a Shopaholic. Again I Sky + this a few weeks ago but unlike Bride Wars I thought this would be a corny chick flick that I would hate. I was wrong. And more disturbingly I could relate to some of the situations that Becca (Isla Fisher) got herself into!

This is another great chick flick and as it was based on a book of the same name by Sophie Kinsella, I even bought the book (it's slightly different as it's based in London and not New York like the film) and the next one in the series (Shopaholic Abroad). There are also several more books in the series.

Brand Focus - Paul's Boutique - love or hate?

This is a new idea I've had about choosing a brand, mainly clothing and accessories and not beauty brands, and seeing what people think about it. Not only will this, hopefully, gain an insight into it's popularity but I think it'll also gain an insight into current and future trends. I'll try to do one of these every week.

First up this week is Paul's Boutique.

This is a brand that makes clothing and accessories and it's priced from £18 for a small purse up to £70 for an oversized bag.

Before now when I'd think of Paul's Boutique I'd think of, amongst others, chavvy, over priced and tacky. But now, and I don't know why, I'm seriously considering buying a Paul's Boutique handbag.

Below are three photos (from ASOS), two purses and one handbag, which I'm debating whether or not 1. they're worth the money, 2. they're not any of the things mentioned above and 3. if I can bear to part with the £30-£55 ish to buy them.

I really quite like this bag but my vanity gets the better of me when considering about purchasing it as I don't think I'd dare take it out with me!

30 day challenge - Day 1

Day 1 of my challenge is favourite song. This has been one of those occasions where you can pick anything but you can't actually think of anything!

So, I decided to do my favourite song right now, which is................................... David Guetta - Gettin' Over You.

I chose this because it's a fun summer tune which whenever I hear it makes me smile, perks me up if I'm feeling down and really really really makes me want to go on holiday (ok this isn't a good thing as I can't afford one this year)!

NOTD - OPI and Nailene

I recently bought the OPI Shrek mini nails collection and even though I have used all 4 colours this is the first time I've painted my nails for them to last more than a day (e.g. I've used base and top coat, applied 2 coats etc.)

This is the purple (Rumple's Wiggin') colour from the collection and it's a gorgeous lilac shade. I applied 2 coats of it so I got a more solid colour and then sealed with my Nails Inc A&E (this isn't a top or base coat but I always use it and my nails last sooo much longer with it).

I bought some Nailene nail art stickers a few weeks ago so I stuck them on.

You get four sheets in a pack for about £4 something and all you do is peel them off and stick them on your nail. They are super sticky so make sure you get them in the right position before applying to your nails. On the back of the packet it does say to seal with a top coat but I haven't bothered. A few of the flowers are not quite where I wanted them but they'll have to do. My thumbs have butterflies on but my camera wouldn't photograph them.

All in all I think this is a good first attempt. I'm taking advantage of being able to wear nail varnish whilst being off work for a week. I work in a shop putting stock out and super sticky sticky tape off boxes and nail varnish don't mix!

Cards

As I've given myself a spending ban (see this post) I've decided to throw myself into my other passion which is crafting. I've posted a couple of cards on here before but crafting is something which I have to be in the mood for and I don't do it all the time because sometimes I find it tedious and boring. Which it really isn't.

I try to sell my cards at work to make a few extra pounds but I can't say I sell enough for it to make a massive different on my income :-( This is a shame because sometimes I spend 30 + minutes on a card and they just sit in a box in my spare bedroom.

The first card is one I did for my boyfriend's friends birthday.

It's a Daisy and Dandelion decoupage image which I layered onto the matching backing paper (all one kit) and put onto a square card. I love square cards as I think they look more contemporary and more expensive! I then simply put a red, contrasting, brand in each corner and then layered a Daisy and Dandelion sentiment onto a piece of gold card and put in the top right hand corner.

The next card is for my boyfriends birthday. I was way ahead of the ball on this one as his birthday isn't until the 15th December!

Again this card was already pre-printed and I used the car decoupage from the kit to add dimension. But then I really found it hard what to do. This kit was really uninspiring and I found that I lacked inspiration. It did come with an ideas sheet but that wasn't very helpful so I decided to use a 'Happy Birthday' sentiment to put in the bottom left hand corner and took a larger 'You never outgrow a classic (just like you)' sentiment and layered in onto silver card. I used my corner punch to round off the corners on the silver card so it matched the sentiment and stuck it on the top right hand corner. I then got four red brads and put one in each of the corners.

Finally this card is for my dad for fathers day. My mum and dad have been on holiday and only got back yesterday so I couldn't give this to him on time which is why I'm posting it now.

As my dad is a fisherman I try to make fishing related cards for him as in the shops fishing cards usually look dated and seem to be aimed for old men, something which my dad isn't. Well he's getting on a bit but I don't think anyone would call him old!

I used products from a range called Smirk for this card. Smirk is a fun and quirky brand which I think only came out last year. I used a fisherman shaker sticker (shakers are products which have beads or something inside so you can shake them) and layered it onto a piece of stripy Smirk paper which was layer onto a piece of gold card. I then used some Smirk fish paper which I cut to the size of my card (A5) and stuck it on. I then stuck on my topper and used a Daisy and Dandelion 'Happy Fathers Day' sentiment and layered this up on the same card & paper as the sticker and stuck below it. To finish it off I used some black gems and used them as fish eyes on the background paper.

Recent buys

As promised yesterday, this is my recent L'Occitane (pronounced: lox-ee-tahn) haul.

I bought these as two separate kits. The one on the left is the floral one which contains:

• Extra gentle hand and body wash
• Cherry blossom bath and shower gel
• Peony shower creme
• Rose hand wash
• Cherry blossom soap

And on the right is the citrus one:

• Extra gentle hand and body wash
• Citrus verbena shower gel
• Verbena showel gel
• Verbena hand wash
• Verbena soap

I absolutely love the verbena scent that L'Occitane do, it's probably my favourite, but I really wanted to try the new peony shower creme and the new rose handwash which is the only reason why I bought the floral kit because I'm not normally a fan of floral scents.

L'Occitane is becoming more and more popular and known about and it's regularly featured in magazines. It's more of a premium brand and products are more expensive that regular mass brands but that's where the old saying "you get what you pay for" comes in.

You only need a very small amount of what ever product you use, they don't contain Lanolin, Tallow or synthetic detergents and they have their own foundation where they help the women of Burkina Faso who produce all of the shea butter in L'Occitane's products.

I would recommend L'Occitane hands down and I don't think I've ever used a product that I don't like, which is somewhat a rarity nowadays.

Summer skincare

Fingers crossed this post doesn't sound like I'm preaching, here it goes....

Obviously we're in summer at the minute and looking after your skin whilst out in the sun is sooooo important.

For as long as I can remember I go out in the sun, spend all day laying about in it and don't apply any form of sun cream because "I'm only young, it won't have any effect on me". Hands up who else has said/thought this?!?! Quite a few of you I'd say.

Of course it's important to use suncreams on your body but most people seem to forget their face and if you're like me you just generally forget about suncreams full stop. But last year in my final year at uni, I was doing a degree in health and for my dissertation I chose to write about skin cancer. I'm quite a knowledgeable person but this really did enlighten me and now I always try to have some form of suncream on.

I use L'Occitane's red rice face moisturiser and when I took a close look on the packaging I was shocked that not anywhere did it mention that it contained any form of SPF (sun protection factor). Ok, so I wear foundation everyday which contains an SPF from 15 - 20 but not everyone does and now its summer I don't want heavy make-up on.

By not wearing an SPF you put yourself at risk of premature ageing, skin cancer and skin damage to name a few. Depending on your skin type everyone needs a different SPF and if you go abroad chances are you'll need a higher SPF than you would in the UK.

MYTH BUSTER: you can still tan even though you have suncream on. The higher the SPF doesn't mean the lighter tan, you're just letting more harmful rays penetrate your skin.

I went on a mission to find a face suncream which smelt nice, wasn't sticky and looked attractive. So I found this in Boots for £11.99 buy one get one free.

Hawaiian Tropic sensitive face sun lotion has an SPF of 30 and it's in a cute funky bottle which is handy to chuck in your bag for on the go use. It's also 120ml which is more than enough to last the whole summer. The only bad thing about it is that it only has a 3 star UVA rating.

UVA rays don't cause skin cancer (UVB rays do) but UVA affects the rate at which skin cancer develops so it's also vitally important to look at this when buying suncreams and not just SPF which blocks UVB rays. The maximum rating is 5 stars which is the highest you can get (all of Boots Soltan range has 5 star UVA protection). This information is found on the back in a circle.

It's also recommended that once opened you throw your suncream away after a year and buy new so that you know you're getting the full SPF protection as overtime this can breakdown meaning that an SPF 30 might only be giving you an SPF of 25 after a year of being open.

Finally, skin cancer is increasing year on year particularly in young adults so lets all try to look after ourselves as this cancer is the most preventable just by taking a few simple steps:

1. apply suncream at least 20-30 minutes before going out in the sun
2. cover up
3. wear a hat
4. stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm
5. reapply suncream every couple of hours
6. always reapply after being in water or buy a water resistant cream

Review - L'Occitane

As a part of their Peony range, L'Occitane has brought out a few make-up products including face powder/eyeshadow, highlighters, lipsticks and lip glosses/balms and prices range from £9.50 up to £22.00.

I bought this a while ago as I'm a total suckers for anything L'Occitane (check my blog tomorrow and you'll see this)! It's called a face powder colour and it's one of those products that you can do anything and everything with, use it as a face powder, a blush and an eyeshadow.

It's a gorgeous pink colour and has a slight iridescent tone to it which is great for the summer. I've used this as a blusher and as an eyeshadow and I prefer it as a blusher. It also has a gorgeous flowery scent of peony so it's very girly!

This cost me £12.50 and its a dinky 3.5g size so I'm going to use it wisely! I don't think I'd buy this specific product again but I'd defiantly buy another shade.

Has anyone else bought one of these products?

Review - L'Oreal studio secrets face primer

L'Oreal studio secrets face primer is a product which is meant to smooth out your complexion for a more even surface and you can use this alone or under make-up.

It is a light, but creamy pink mousse which leaves your skin feeling lovely and silky. I've been using this under make-up as it's meant to help your make-up go on smoother and last longer.

I had slight reservations about using this at first because as I have combination skin I'm a bit funny about putting too many products on it but I found that this absorbed quickly and it didn't feel like I had an extra product on. I wouldn't say it made my make-up last longer but it defiantly felt like my foundation went on better.

I would buy this again but as it costs £12.99 I'm not sure I would pay full price for it.

Review - Mascaras

I bought both of these mascaras a while ago and had very high hope for them both.

Firstly I bought the Avon Super Shock mascara which costs £8.00. The funky limited edition packaging played a major part in purchasing it - I'm a sucker for animal prints! The brush on the end of the wand is long, very long, and as for the width of it, it's nothing special. It gives nice lash definition but I wouldn't say that it lives up to it's name. If I were choosing a mascara for a night out I defiantly wouldn't choose this one.

Secondly I bought the new L'oreal volume million lashes mascara which retails at £10.99. I have commented on quite a few blogs that I didn't like this mascara but after using it religiously for the last few day I'm going to swallow my pride and say that I was wrong (phew, that hurt!).

The brush is alot smaller in length than the Avon mascara but it is slightly wider, still not as wide as my all time favourite Maxfactor False Lash Effect. I think that because of this it is easy to layer up to create the ultimate volumising effect.

Overall, I have used better mascaras: Maxfactor's False Lash Effect and Revlon's Double Twist are my number one and two favourites.

Personally I defiantly wouldn't purchase the Avon mascara again but I would probably buy the L'Oreal one, if it was on offer!

I got this book last week and lets put it this way, it took longer to get delivered than it took me to read it!

Sharon Marshall is the soap news person off This Morning and this is her book about her time as a tabloid journalist. The back of the book says:

'I didn't know I was starting a life where I'd be asked to do three impossible things before breakfast, and be sworn at by four celebrities by lunch. I just thought, hey, I've got a job on a tabloid.' Sharon Marshall was a tabloid reporter for ten years. Along the way she saw and did some Very Bad Things. She also had a spectacularly lousy love life. It took the entire decade to realise the two may be connected. In her hilariously honest memoirs she reveals what really goes on behind the scenes at a major tabloid newspaper. What lengths will a tabloid hack go to, just to get the story? What do celebrities (secretly) do to get into the headlines? And can a job which involves fighting with popstars, pretending to be a swinger and provoking a fuming Jeremy Paxman ever make you marriage material?

It's a hilarious and shocking read with incidences that you really couldn't make up. It's a great summer read so check it out.

Recent Buys!

I've bought a few new things this week including these cute flower hair clips which were £3 from New Look. Sorry the photo isn't that great!

My Benefit 10 was off Dainty Dollymix's blog sale and was a bargain at £12. I'd wanted to try this after my mum got a make-over at a Benefit counter and this made she cheekbones look lovely and defined. When I first tried it I wasn't impressed but I now lightly sweep it on and it leaves me with a nice, but subtle, cheekbone definition (if you get that!)
Finally my last purchases were the mini Maxfactor nail polish with I did a NOTD here and three of the new 17 mirror shine lipsticks.

The shades of the lipsticks are (L-R): Flirtini, Belle and Sugar Daddy. The colour of the bullets look quite striking but when you put them on they are much more pale and subtle (I'm using that word alot at the minute aren't I!) The consistency is more of a cross between a lipstick and a gloss but the light texture is great for summer when you don't really want to feel like you're wearing a lot of make-up.

Recent freebies!

At the minute there are quite a few good offers running with certain products where you get things for free.

First up is, ok so this one is quite old, the chance to win a Benefit lipstick or lipgloss when you buy promotional Cadbury Flakes. I won one a while ago (I did post on my blog) and chose the 'Lala land' shade (photo below). On the colour swatch on the website it looked like a pink shade but it's actually more of a brown, still nice though but I find that I have to apply it and then blot my lips to get a more natural subtler shade. I think this promotion is running until the end of October.

Second up is when you buy More magazine you get a free Barry M dazzle dust from Superdrug worth £4.50. This is before the 15th June so be quick! Considering the magazine is £1.50, or if bought from WHSmith 80p (mega bargain!) it's well worth it which is why I bought four!

The photo isn't the best but they were too sparkly with the flash on and you couldn't really see them. They are in order: shade 23 (a royal blue), shade 44 (bronze), shade 9 (silver) and shade 82 (a mint green).

Finally is the very popular and very blogged about free Benefit products with Glamour magazine. The magazine is £2 and you get the choice of three products: it stick concealer (worth £17), Bag gal eyeliner (worth £14) or the eye bright stick (worth £14) or like me and many others you can't make the choice and get all three!
I hadn't used any of these products before so this was a great chance to try them and if I didn't like them it wouldn't be a great loss as they were only £2. So far I've only used the Eyebright which I'm impressed with but tomorrow I'm going to experiment with the other two. Who knows I might end up trawling the newsagents for some more!

NOTD - Maxfactor

Maxfactor Max Effect mini nail polish in shade 1 (Ivory).

This is the fist Maxfactor nail polish I've ever used and I really like it. I used 2 coats to get a more intense gold colour (even though it's called ivory) but it's lasted all day at work and hasn't chipped which is great!

It's a really cute size so I feel don't feel quite as guilty if I only use it a few times and then never use it again, it seems less of a waste!

There are some really nice colours in the range and they're £3.49 and they're on 3 for 2 in Boots until tuesday.

My first Clinique purchase!

I saw this palette in a sunday newspaper magazine ages ago and loved the colours. They are lovely shimmery shades which are great for summer (and they aren't an eyecream, which I hate and soooo many summer eyeshadows seem to be).

It was £22.50 but I got it off my Boots points because as I hadn't tried Clinique before I didn't want to waste my money if I didn't like it and I'm kind of glad I did.

I've only used it a couple of times and I'm undecided. I don't have time to re-apply or touch up my make-up in the day whilst I'm at work so I need something that lasts all day. Fair enough they stayed on all day but I found that the colours creased and the gold undertone came through quite strong.

I was in two minds about whether to sell it or not but I'm going to persevere with it.

NOTD - Rimmel

Ok so this isn't exactly a NOTD as this was taken a few weeks ago but I thought I'd share it with you.

The polish is Rimmel 60 seconds in Sky High. It went on really well and lasted quite a while but I did put my can't-live-without Nails Inc top coat over it.

It's not really a colour I'd usually go for but thought that it would be a nice change and I now quite like it!
