Next Home wishlist

Just a few things I spied whilst out shopping the other week

Rochelle medium sofa - £599
This sofa is so comfy and it is more pricey than I would normally pay but you can tell the difference in quality

Oslo chair and matching footstool - £299 & £180
As soon as I saw this I loved it! It doesn't look very comfy but believe me it is and I love the teal striped fabric

Spotty kettle - £30
It's pink and spotty, what's not to like?

 Bread bin - £28
I saw this in cream and it looks so classy. I've been after a bread bin for while and this is so funky!

Keep calm and put the kettle on canvas - £20

What do you think to Next Home? Personally I love their stuff and could spend a fortune so have to be quite restrained and tell myself "No"!

The week that was...

I've got quite a few things this week which I want to quickly blog about including:

  • Home Alone no more - This week the BF came home! Yey! He'd been away for 6 days on a course so I was missing him a tiny little bit! I never used to mind being home alone but now I'm used to having someone here I don't like is so much. Don't get me wrong though I enjoyed having some time alone to properly start sorting the house out, it's only taken me a year!

  • TV - This week also saw another entertaining shocking episode of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding which made the revelation at the almost 23 I would be classed as 'on the shelf' as I'm unmarried! Ahhh happy days! Annnnnnd the return of Secret Diary of a Call Girl! I only started watching this last series and if you haven't watched it your missing out, it's hilarious!

  • Ebaying - I also raised another £50 by ebaying so all I need is £30 and then I'll have reached my target! But I'm going to sort through my clothes in the loft to see if there's anything in there that I could sell as obviously if it's up there I don't need it. But my blog sales are still running so please take a look on the 'pages' section below my header, there's cosmetics and cards.

  • Lily Love Lola - I was also featured on Victoria's '5 good things' post which you can find here. This resulted in a number of new followers and an amazing amount of hits for my blog so 'Thank you and hello new followers!'

  • Rugby - The 6 nations started this week with England v Wales and England won! Yey! Can't wait for the next one!

  • Giveaway - And this week I launched my 100 followers giveaway which you can find here.
Hmm I think that's everything for another week! Blimey, had a lot here to cram in to my normally small post, sorry if I bored you! Hope you all had a good week too!

Review - No7 Intense Volume mascara

I've had this No7 Intense Volume waterproof mascara for a while but hadn't really used it until a couple of weeks ago when my favourite Revlon one dried out so thought I'd give this one a proper go to see how it compared.

The brush is bigger than a normal mascara one but it's not the biggest that I've used and it's also not a spiky plastic brush like some other brands use which I do not get on with at all.

The mascara is a nice consistency, not too thick but also not too thin, and with the brush it's easy to apply. I find it easier to coat my lashes using the end of the brush and then use the full brush to brush it through so it doesn't clump. I also wait for the first coat to dry before applying another layer and then I do it again. This means you get maximum length and volume to give you luscious lashes!

And a close up of my lashes. I was quite impressed with the results, it's not my favourite mascara but for everyday use it definitely gets my vote!
This is available exclusively from Boots and is £11.50.

Cosmetic shelf life

In 2005 the European Union introduced a rule where by cosmetic and beauty products had to display an icon stating how long they were safe to use once opened. This icon is called the period after opening (PAO) symbol. Today all of the products in health and beauty retailers (unless the stock is ancient) will show this information on the packaging. Products which don't need to show this information are:
  • single use products (e.g. hair dye)
  • products which don't get exposed to the outside environment (e.g. aerosols)
  • products which have a shelf life of a minimum of 30 months
The symbol you need to be on the look out for is this:

It is an open pot with an amount of months in it which the specific product is 'safe' to use. The symbol above shows that that product, once opened, must be used within 12 months. Some examples of this on products are below:

No7 Eye make-up remover - PAO: 6 months

Good Things Miracle Mattifier - PAO: 12 months

Bourjois Little Round Pot eyeshadow - PAO: 18 months

No7 Shine Free make-up base - PAO: 24 months

As well as the PAO symbol we're told by retailers and manufacturers that we should only use cosmetics for a certain period of time as these will then become 'out of date'. Typical use by dates are:
  • Mascara:  3 - 6 months
  • Blusher: 12 - 18 months
  • Lipstick: 18 months
  • Tinted moisturiser: 12 months
  • Foundation: 6 months
  • Eyeshadow: 12 months
  • Liquid eyeliner: 3-6 months
  • Eye pencil: 24 months

I can see the logic for these for certain products. Mascara's, for instance, can be a breeding ground for bacteria. You stick the wand into the tube and reuse over and over again and as it sits in the product you can't clean or sanitise it. This is also the same for lipglosses. Bacteria in these products can result in you contracting infections such as conjunctivitus in your eyes and cold sores around your lips and mouth. Items which require sharpening, e.g. lip pencils and eye liners, can be used longer as any nasties are sharpened off but don't take this for granted. Also never share items like these as you'll be swapping and spreading germs and infections about, ewwww!

I would also use with caution sun creams which were opened the previous summer. Yes the bottle might have a PAO of, for instance, 24 months but in time the SPF factor can decrease meaning the first summer you open your factor 50 you'll get maximum protection but the next summer when you finish off you half used bottle you might only be putting on factor 25.

But how strongly should we grasp this concept of PAO and use by dates?

I personally only use the PAO symbol as a guide to how long you should keep a product. The majority of us know when it's time to throw something away. This can be judged by smell, look and texture. I recently was using a L'Occitane cleanser and toner which had a 6 month PAO but after using them everyday they lasted me 9 months. They still smelt fine and didn't irritate my skin so I judged them to be ok to use. On the other hand I also had a lipgloss which I went to use which looked fine in the tube but when I went to apply it, it had a strong alcohol smell. This obviously wasn't right so it got thrown away.

If I did religiously listen to PAOs and use by's it would cost me an absolute fortune every year to replace my products just because I was told that they weren't safe to use anymore.

To maximize product life there are some things you can do to get the most out of your products and to protect yourself from harm which include:
  • not adding anything to your products e.g. water to mascara if it's become clumpy
  • not sharing them with anyone to prevent the spread of germs
  • throw away any products which have come into contact with parts of your body with infections e.g. eyes if you have conjunctivitis

What are your feelings on PAOs? Do you stick to the use by periods or do you judge yourself by when it's time to throw your products away?

Product use up

This is the first post of my new years product use up challenge. I set my challenge at the beginning of the year to use up my huge stash of toiletries before the end of the year. This is a MEGA challenge!

So this month I've done quite well as I've used quite a lot of products which were part used.

Products used:
VO5 hairspray
Toni & Guy brunette conditioner
Veet in shower hair removal cream
Avon Senses hand wash
L'Occitane verbena ice body gel
L'Occitane Candied Rose shower gel
L'Occitane Sweet Cherry shower gel
No7 eye make up remover

Products used:
Sure deodorant
L'Occitane Delicious Almond shower gel
Dr Nick Lowe dermabrasion peel

So that's 11 products used in total! It feels really good seeing empty bottles (except for the dregs in the bottom!)

How have you done this month using up your products?
